Asshak! Tales from the Sahara!

Na het grote succes van De zoutmannen van Tibet streek Ulrike Koch neer bij de Toeareg, een legendarisch volk van woestijnnomaden in de Sahara. In tegenstelling tot wat gebruikelijk is in de islamitische wereld dragen bij hen niet de vrouwen maar de mannen een gezichtssluier. De Toeareg houden zich aan ässhäk, een soort moraalcode. Het betekent een leven volgens waardigheid en het respecteren van alle levende wezens. Poëzie en muziek zijn hierbij van essentieel belang: de vrouwen brengen door het bespelen van de imzâd (een éénsnarig instrument) de waarden van hun volk in
herinnering, zoals moed, geduld en inlevingsvermogen. Kochs manier van werken leverde een intiem portret op van een adembenemende schoonheid.

After the huge success of The Salt Men of Tibet region Ulrike Koch resigned to the Tuareg, a legendary nation of nomads in the Sahara. Contrary to common usage in the Islamic world are with them not women but men, a face veil. Ässhäk adhere to the Tuareg, a kind of moral code. It means a life in dignity and respect for all living beings. Poetry and music are of essential importance: by bringing the women playing the imzâd (a string instrument) the values of their people
memory, such as courage, patience and empathy. Koch's method of working yielded an intimate portrait of a breathtaking beauty.
